What do I do with my book?

Anything you like! Specifically, the point is change the book’s status from a “paperback nobody” to a “work of art.”

Can I accompany my piece with a statement?

Yes! A work-specific artist statement is highly encouraged. We will have a compilation of bios and statements from all participating artists to accompany the exhibition.

What’s the maximum size of the finished piece?

30” x 30”

If your piece is going to be bigger than 14” x 14” or if you think that it will require special display methods, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can ensure there’s adequate space for everyone.

Can you mail me a paperback?

We would love to send you a paperback from our pile, but are you sure? You can choose whatever old paperbacks you have in your attic, garage, under your bed…or where ever.

I’m not a traditional visual artist, can I still participate?

Don’t worry about it!! We encourage people from all sorts of background to take this challenge!

Where is the money going?

The proceeds will go towards the operations and exhibition costs at the gallery division of Freedom CC. Freedom is a nonprofit cooperative that supports artists mainly by having a constant programming of monthly exhibitions with opening receptions. We want to be able to have these exhibitions as well as having a lot more free events…. while at the same time still have the resources to maintain the space, promote extensively and keep the operations at the awesomest level.

What’s going to be in your 2011 programming?

You tell me! We are open to suggestions, just drop me an e-mail and let me know what you would like to see from us in the coming year. Of course, we will still have the monthly exhibitions (along with their awesome opening receptions) from February onwards. In fact, when we decide on the full list of exhibitions, we are going to be drawing from the pool of participants of this project. So, make sure you send in a link to your portfolio or some jpegs!

Hope this clears things up a little more. If you have other questions, just ask away!

REMEMBER – The deadline is in TWELVE DAYS!!!!

Good luck!!!!

PAPERBACK NOBODIES NO MORE is a benefit exhibition and silent auction of art works made from old paperbacks. The concept of the show is to fight against the transient quality of books by elevating the status and value of these neglected novels into those of art.

Each artist can receive either a full paperback or select pages from the book. You are expected to create something using it by decorating, embellishing, painting on, painting in, adding to, subtracting from, or by any means you see fit.

Interested in participating? These are the dates to remember:

November 1: Registration is open and books are available to pick up
November 30: Drop off your finished books or pages ready to hang
December 10: Opening Reception! Silent auction goes on from 1 pm – 2 am.
December 11: Remaining works are exhibited, books are available for sale on the spot at a fixed price for as long as quantities last.
